iPhone Price in the UK
On September 18, 2007, Steve Jobs announced that the 8 GB iPhone will be available for purchase in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2007. The iPhone will be sold at The Carphone Warehouse and in Apple stores and the iPhone UK price will be £269 if you sign up for an 18-month contract with Telefónica's O2 Telecommunications, which is the exclusive carrier of the UK iPhone. There will be three different packages available and the monthly iPhone price UK will vary between £35 and £55 depending on the number of minutes. Regardless of which package you chose, Wi-Fi, Visual Voicemail and unlimited data usage will be included in this UK iPhone price.
The iPhone UK price of £269 for the 8GB model can be compared to the iPhone US prices of US$499 and US$599 for the 4GB and 8GB models when they were released by Apple on June 29, 2007. When the 4GB iPhone was discontinued on September 5, 2007, the price of the 8GB model was simultaneously lowered down to US$399. The current iPhone UK price of £269 for the November 9 launch is roughly equivalent to US$547. How this will affect the UK sales is yet to be seen. What we do know is that US$399 is less than £196 and the idea of saving over £70 might tempt at least some UK buyers to purchase a phone from overseas and attempt to unlock it for UK use. Programs have already been design that claims to be able to unlock the iPhone. This might force Apple to adjust the UK iPhone price down to the American level. It should however be noted that the American price of US$399 does not include tax, while the UK iPhone price includes 17.5% VAT.
